We finally made it to Iceland after years of procrastinating about going. It turned out to be fascinating in many ways. It's a land of volcanoes and glaciers, puffins and whales.
We started out on Westman Islands in Heimaey that has a recent volcanic history, where an eruption in 1973 threatened the entire town and harbor. Luckily the harbor was saved but many homes were lost to lava flow.
Returning to the mainland we spent a few days in Reykjavik before beginning out journey up the west coast.
Kötlujökull Glacier
Kötlujökull Glacier is a subglacial volcano, meaning that the volcano is located beneath the glacier. This makes it a potentially dangerous glacier, as an eruption could cause the glacier to melt and release a large amount of water, which could cause flooding and other damage.
