Getting to the end of the earth takes a bit of time. Steven and Sylvia started in San Francisco (37.8° N), Howard started in Tennessee; and we all headed to Buenos Aires before flying to Tierra del Fuego (54.9° S) to board M/V Corinthian. The ship is a striking example of teamwork in every aspect of our traveler experience. Where to start? OAT operates a very tight ship. The crew anticipates our needs; and the procedure to disembark/embark the zodiacs runs like clockwork. The Expedition Staff prepped us with talks about wildlife, geology, climate, ecology and more.

We visited the Antarctic Peninsula which is a mountainous region with many glaciers and ice shelves. The peninsula is home to a variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, and whales.

The Antarctic Peninsula is claimed by three countries: Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom. The only permanent human settlements are scientific research stations.

Base Esperanza

Base Esperanza is an Argentine research station in Hope Bay at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. it's a major center for scientific research in Antarctica. Scientists at the base study a variety of topics, including glaciology, meteorology, biology, and geology.

Deacon Peak

We took a shore hike on one of the Penguin Islands and climbed Deacon Peak, which is a basaltic cone with a 350-meter-wide summit crater. It is thought to have formed about 10 million years ago. The peak is covered in snow and ice for most of the year, and it is only accessible by boat or helicopter.
